New York, NY (July 31, 2025) - Charlene Cockett has been announced as the winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest "$20,000 Song of the Year” for her original song “Lazy Afternoon". The song was one of 12 Lennon Award winners which competed for the "Song of The Year.”
Born in Canada to Jamaican parents, Char is a natural-born singer and songwriter with a lifelong devotion to music. Her sultry voice, mellow tone, and seamless genre-blending have become signature elements of her artistry, earning her recognition as a certified songwriter, singer, arranger, and vocal producer.
Char’s musical journey began in childhood and has carried her across borders and genres. Her professional career took flight after relocating to Brooklyn, New York, where she had the opportunity to work with the late, legendary Jam Master Jay (Jason Mizell) and later collaborate with the iconic songwriting and production team Full Force.
Over the years, Char has contributed her pen and vocals to a range of projects, showcasing her versatility and unmistakable style. With a gift for vocal production and a passion for crafting emotionally resonant songs, she continues to make her mark in the music world. Her latest EP, “Intermission", is a soulful tribute to self-love and acceptance. True to form, the project weaves her mellow tone and soul soaked harmonies into genre-defying soundscapes that highlight both her range and depth as an artist.
Char’s music is not just heard—it’s felt. And with Lazy Afternoon, she invites listeners to pause, reflect, and embrace the beauty of music, life and love.
